In the heart of Black Rock City, where the desert swallows time and space, Vampire Empire’s Black Tower stood as a spectral beacon. A neo-gothic monolith rising into the sky, its perforated wooden facade whispered secrets of the in-between, of shadow and light, of the known and the unknown.
By day, the tower was subdued, blending into the dust-laden landscape, its intricate perforated patterns dissolving into the horizon. The wind passed through it effortlessly, making it feel like it had always been there, like a relic of a forgotten era. But as night fell, the transformation began. The tower pulsed with an eerie red glow, as if it had awakened from its slumber. Light seeped through the carved patterns like lifeblood, a silent invocation to those drawn to the mysteries of the night. At its core, Black Tower BM ’23 was more than a structure. It was a gateway. A threshold between the profane and the sacred, the mundane and the fantastic. A passage into the hidden sanctuary of Vampire Empire’s speakeasy, where the music pulsed, the night deepened, and lost travelers found themselves again in the glow of a different kind of fire.

- Project Overview
- Black Tower was a fully self-supporting wooden structure standing over 12 meters tall (39.4 feet), with a ground footprint of 46 sqm and an accessible upper level of approximately 40 square meters also open to the public. Designed and built as part of the Vampire Empire theme camp at Burning Man 2023, the tower served as both a landmark and an architectural threshold leading into the camp’s underground speakeasy.
- Materials & Construction
- The structure was entirely made of wood, utilizing CNC-cut plywood panels mounted onto a solid wooden frame. The design relied on the interplay of structural integrity and aesthetic perforation, where the intricate patterns not only created a distinct visual identity but also allowed the structure to breathe in the extreme desert conditions. The entire assembly was bolt-fastened and slot-fitted, ensuring both ease of assembly and disassembly, in alignment with Burning Man’s Leave No Trace principles. No permanent foundations were used, and the entire tower was designed to be dismantled without leaving any impact on the Playa surface.
- Challenges & Execution
- Constructing in Black Rock Desert is always a challenge, but 2023 presented even greater difficulties due to severe weather conditions. Heavy rains delayed access to the site, forcing the Vampire Empire build team into a compressed timeline. The construction began late, under unpredictable conditions, requiring rapid adaptation, extended work hours, and a reliance on both the dedication of our fantastic camp volunteers and the generosity of passing builders who stopped to help. Despite these obstacles, the Black Tower was completed just in time, right before the next storm hit. This achievement was a testament to the perseverance, skill, and passion of the team that brought it to life.
- Lighting & Transformation
- During the day, the Black Tower remained visually subtle, it’s dark wooden facade absorbing the desert light, its perforations blending with the shifting dust. However, at night, a red internal lighting system activated, transforming the structure into a glowing beacon. The light seeped through the intricate cutouts, creating the illusion of an awakened entity, an homage to the vampiric lore that inspired the Vampire Empire camp.
